P.E

Intent

The majority of children at Walmley are able to access a range of physical activity/classes outside of school. Our role in school is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that further develops skills and knowledge and understanding of physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Our curriculum aims to ensure children are able to work as part of a team, show great sportsmanship, have positive attitudes and be resilient when faced with challenges. With a world full of technology, we want to inspire children to take part in sport, both inside and outside school, and hopefully find a passion which they will be able to continue for the rest of their lives. It is important to us that our children find a love of sport and understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Implementation

We have an inclusive curriculum, designed to ensure all pupils can take part. The National Curriculum is at the core of what we do. We have created a progression of skills document, that outlines the skills that need to be taught in each area of P.E; this has been created from a range of sources to make it relevant for children at Walmley. Our curriculum ensures we expose children to a range of sports to expand beyond the core sports e.g. football - we know that it is important to extend what they get outside of school.  This document enables staff to plan lessons that build on children’s prior knowledge and ensures lessons are accessible for all.

Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week covering two different sports/skills per term – this ensures good coverage and means all areas of the curriculum are covered. Training needs are identified through monitoring.

We ensure our lessons are centred around showing good sportsmanship and each lesson, a child is celebrated for demonstrating this. In addition, we have an established Play leaders’ programme in place to encourage physical activity at lunchtimes.

We encourage lessons across the curriculum to allow the children to be up and active as much as possible. As well as learning about the importance of keeping active, children are made aware of things such as the importance of eating a balanced diet and ensuring they get enough sleep through our P.S.H.E, Food Technology and Science Curriculum.

All children are provided with the opportunity to be part of a team, when competing in inter-house competitions throughout the year. We also have a high percentage of our children representing the school in competitions as we are very passionate about as many children as possible representing a school team, including SEND. To facilitate this, we compete in a vast amount of sports that caters for all. We are very pleased to have been awarded the Gold School Games Mark due to our commitment to the development of competition for all across our school and into the community.

We pride ourselves on providing children with a wide range of extra-curricular clubs which are on offer all year round. Sporting Clubs are very popular, and there are a variety of clubs available to cater many different interests.

Children attend activity centres to complete outdoor and adventurous activities. They visit Woodlands in Year 3 and Whitemoor Lakes in Year 5. Each of these educational visits provide opportunities for the children to work collaboratively and face new challenges.

We are part of a strong network of schools (Wilson Stuart) which regularly meet to provide up to date Staff CPD, current initiatives and support. We are very proud of being recognised as Primary School of the year 2018 in Physical Education.

We receive Sports Premium funding which supports the high-quality provision in Physical Education and ensures that all aspects of P.E are sustainable.

Impact

The impact of our Physical Education Curriculum is that our pupils leave us with the knowledge and skills of how to lead a healthy lifestyle and the understanding of the positive impacts this can have on their life. They will also have the skills to be able to work as part of a team, show great sportsmanship, have positive attitudes and be resilient when faced with challenges.

Children will have a passion for sport and be excited to try new sporting activities which is something that can be further developed at secondary school, with the hope that they have a lifelong passion for taking part in physical activity.
